The first Viennese municipal buildings rely on geothermal energy for climate -neutral warmth
On March 27, 2025, a pioneering project for decarbonizing the living space in Vienna goes into trial operation: at Deutschordenstraße 7-25 in Penzing, the first complete change of Viennese community building to climate-neutral energy supply starts. Innovative heat pumps are used here, which already supply 18 apartments with heating and hot water. From mid -April, 90 more apartments are to be connected, with the aim of supplying all apartments of the complex with the new system by October. wien.gv.at reports that the changeover to this central heat pump system is part of a comprehensive renovation project, which is also a reduction of the Heating requirement has 75 percent goal.
The project is realized in cooperation between Wiener Wohnen and Vienna Energie and uses twelve geothermal probes that reach up to 120 meters. The earth energy is used for both room heating and hot water treatment. At the same time, the power requirement of the heat pump is mainly covered by a photovoltaic system that is installed on the roof. Kurier emphasizes that this measure is part of the initiative "out of gas", which drives the exit from fossil fuels in Vienna.
comprehensive renovation and effective measures
The switch to climate -friendly heating technology takes place after a comprehensive thermal renovation that brings with it improving the quality of living. These include the installation of new elevators, fire protection entrance doors, stroller rooms, wheelchair ramps and improved outer lighting. The total costs for the project amount to 26 million euros. A total of 59 thermal renovation projects in Vienna are currently in the construction phase, which include investments of 660 million euros and affect around 14,000 community apartments.
According to the information from Fraunhofer ISE In the coming years, a wide range of further projects are planned to implement climate-neutral heat supply in Vienna. The planned switch to the new technology is also accompanied by an incentive system for tenants. These receive a decarbonization bonus between 1,000 and 1,500 euros to facilitate the change. Around 80 percent of tenants in Deutschordenstraße have already chosen this change.
goals for the future
The long -term goal of Wiener Wohnen is to convert all municipal buildings in Vienna to ecological heat supply by 2040. This is a voluntary measure that is carried out as part of a broader strategy to reduce CO2 emissions in the urban area. Another relevant project is located in the neighboring system of Deutschordenstraße 27-35, which will also be switched to the new heat pump technology in the next six months. This takes a crucial step towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly living in Vienna.
