Energy preparation: This is how Austria protects itself from winter bottlenecks!

Europa, EU - Energy supply in Europe remains a central topic, especially in connection with the lessons from winter 2022/23. The gas stores were not sufficiently filled at the time, which led to a tense supply situation due to the Ukraine War. According to Orf Salzburg , the population was called to save gas, which led to a decrease in consumption by eight percent. At the moment there are no bottlenecks, but as a precaution, the government is planning measures in the event of a future energy shortage. In a further step, the governor would then be responsible for the determination of state consumption quotas in order to regulate temporary shutdowns in various districts.

strategic measures for security of supply

To cope with the energy crisis and diversify the supply, the EU has launched the platform for the aggregation of gas inquiries. This ensures that all member states bundle their demand structures and act more uniformly in order to create better prices and conditions. Gas.info reports that there have been regular tendering rounds since the introduction of this measure in order to secure gas for the winter of 2023/2024. In several tenders, more than 54 billion cubic meters of gas demand were aggregated by European companies, which contributes significantly to the security of supply in the coming winter season.

Thanks to this strategic approach, the EU can not only strengthen its price negotiations towards international suppliers, but also facilitate access to affordable energy. The planned measures are intended to prevent Member States from beating each other in competition and thereby raising prices. The first legal basis for the EU Energy platform was determined at the end of 2022, and similar initiatives will be continued by the end of 2024.
