Viennese election campaign: KPÖ and links demand social justice and right of residence!
Wien, Österreich - On April 2, 2025, the KPÖ and the left party presented their election program for the upcoming Vienna election. Central topics of the program are affordable living, health and care, climate justice, a fair education system and the creation of a solidarity city without racism, feminism and LGBTQI+ representation. With the clear goal of moving into the town hall, Barbara Urbanic, the top candidate of the KPÖ, and Angelika Adenamer, the candidate from the left, present her comprehensive proposals to appear as "annoying social opposition" and to address the current challenges, which are caused in particular by high energy prices and the unbalanced distribution of wealth. In her speech,
urbanic criticized the increased energy prices and called for a fundamental reform of Vienna Energy so that it works exclusively for the population. In addition, she called for an energy circuit for all Viennese: inside to reduce the financial pressure. Adden Samer drew attention to the diversity of Vienna and campaigned for a right to vote for everyone with solidified stay and lower hurdles for allocation of citizenship. Your suggestions include a faster naturalization procedure and effective protection of discrimination.
affordable living in the focus
A key point of the election program is the demand for the resumption of the construction of city's own apartments and the renovation of existing buildings. Urbanic also called for the introduction of a “living picker” for the private rental market, in which landlords must: inside every three years the habitability of their objects must demonstrate. This coincides with the measures of the city of Vienna, which has already started to introduce rental price stops in the municipal building for the years 2024 and 2025 in order to reduce the economic pressure on citizens. This regulation ensures that the main rent of the guideline value and category rental is not raised during this period.
According to a forecast of the WIFO, the costs of these measures are around 43 million euros, which should offer the tenant: inside financial security and relief. The Vienna Landtag also plans to increase and expand residential aid on November 23, 2025, which will be important for around 185,000 tenancy. On average, tenants can expect a saving of around 400 euros annually in Kat A.
Health and care reform
Another focus of the election programs is the reform of the health and care system. Anna Svec, another candidate from the left party, criticized the existing two-class medicine and the overload of the nursing staff. She called for higher wages for the employees and a reduction in working hours with full wages and personnel equalization in the Vienna Health Association.
The required change in the area of social security can also be seen against the background of the nationwide discussion about poverty and social security systems. The upcoming elections in Germany, in particular the Bundestag election 2025, show that the topic of covers, such as the citizen benefit in the election programs of the parties, is also in focus. Around 14 million people in Germany are affected by poverty, and various parties strive to reform and improve social security and financial support in order to counteract the growing gap between poor and rich.
The initiatives of the KPÖ and left in Vienna are therefore part of a larger movement that aims at fairer living conditions and more equal opportunities.
The Viennese city government and the political actors are faced with the challenge of taking into account the needs of its citizens: inside in the face of the geopolitical developments and increasing cost of living. This will not only have an impact on the upcoming elections, but also on the social framework in the capital.
