Wels: Three novice drivers lose their licenses after speeding!

On March 25, 2025, in Wels, Upper Austria, several young drivers were stopped by the police after driving well above the permitted speed limits. Over the course of just two hours, several safety-related violations occurred, prompting officers to confiscate the licenses of two probationary license holders.

At 9:18 p.m., police caught a 19-year-old driver traveling at a speed of 131 km/h on the B137, instead of the permitted limit of 70 km/h. His driver's license was provisionally revoked and he was reported several times. A few hours later, at 11:30 p.m., a 20-year-old probationary license holder from Lower Austria was stopped for also driving at an excessive speed of 135 km/h. Here too, the electronic driving license was taken digitally and an advertisement was created.

Road safety in focus

Significant speeding is one of the most common causes of serious traffic accidents. This is also underlined by the general road safety in Germany, which is considered one of the best in the world despite a high traffic density. However, numerous accidents occur every year, often caused by ignoring speed limits or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This problem is addressed by the authorities carrying out speed and alcohol tests in order to increase road safety.

Shortly before midnight, the police also discovered a 60-year-old Serb who was driving erratically on Salzburger Straße. An alcohol test gave a positive result, whereupon the officers took his vehicle keys and also filed a report.

Measures to increase security

In order to continuously improve road safety, it is crucial to adhere to certain safety measures. Effective strategies include defensive driving styles, regular vehicle maintenance and compliance with technical safety standards such as ABS and ESP. Education through campaigns and safety training also plays an important role in sensitizing both novice and experienced drivers to the topic of road safety.

According to current statistics, there were around 2.4 million traffic accidents in Germany in 2023, of which around 270,000 resulted in personal injury. These figures highlight the urgency of intensifying measures to prevent speeding and other safety risks. The most common causes of accidents remain speeding and distractions caused by smartphones, which in combination can lead to dangerous situations.
