Mülheim Christmas market: anticipation or sadness about the dreary atmosphere?
The pre-Christmas season is in full swing and the first lights are illuminating the pedestrian zones in North Rhine-Westphalia. While the Christmas markets are preparing for their big appearance, there is a special focus on the Christmas market in Mülheim, which opens its doors on November 25th. But instead of spreading anticipation, critical voices are already piling up during the construction work. The “Mülheim Christmas get-together” seems to be coming under more and more criticism, and not without reason.
In a heated discussion on Facebook, the citizens of Mülheim are anything but enthusiastic. Photos of the 5 meter high Christmas tree being put up have made the rounds, but the comments are anything but festive. “As run down as it is now,” one user complains about the condition of the city center. Another asks provocatively: "Who should there be a 10-meter tree for? Hardly anyone goes into the city anymore anyway." The disappointment with the meager stalls and the dreary atmosphere is obvious. “Three stalls and that’s a Christmas market,” complains another commentator and describes the market as the “laughing stock of the Ruhr area”.
Criticism and dissenting voices
Despite the negative response, there are also voices trying to keep the anticipation going. “It's not much, but it's better than no tree,” says one user optimistically. Another added: “If it’s decorated a bit for Christmas, I’ll be happy.” But the question remains: Can a small Christmas market with just a few stalls really win the hearts of Mülheim residents? Opinions are divided, and the anticipation of the contemplative time is greatly dampened by the harsh criticism.
