Trickers strike again: Cash on the roadside stolen!

On Monday, June 23, 2025, two people in Carinthia celebrated a brazen trick fraud. A 20-year-old woman on the B78 between Reichenfels and Bad St. Leonhard was approached by an unknown man. The perpetrator asked in broken English for money for fuel to travel to Rome with his wife. The woman, impressed by the story, gave him a low three -digit amount in cash and in return received the man's cell phone number as supposed security, with the promise to be contacted the next day to repay the money. Upon arrival at the workplace, the woman filed a complaint with the police, such as Klick Carinthia.

Another fraud was reported on the same day. A 45-year-old man was also confronted with the same stitch on the B70 in the area of the Twimberg trench. He also handed over several hundred euros and received a worthless wristwatch as well as supposed wedding rings, which also had no value. The police then initiated a search according to the vehicle described, a black sedan with an English license plate and at least two occupants, which has so far been unsuccessful. The investigators ask the population for relevant information.

Police warn of fraud stitches

The current incidents are part of a larger trend that deals with the State Police Directorate of Carinthia. Investigators particularly warn of an attempt to fraud, which is known as a "police trick". Here, fraudsters are as police officers to demand money from their victims. An example from Klagenfurt shows how an 85-year-old woman was informed about a supposed traffic accident of her daughter and thus paid 60,000 euros in deposit. Fortunately, a taxi driver was able to inform them in good time and alert the police, as 5 minutes describes in detail.

The police provide clear behavioral instructions: the calls should be put on directly. Relatives who are supposedly affected should be contacted, and in case of doubt, the police can be reached under emergency number 133. It is important not to be put under pressure in such situations.

Change of fraud crime

The developments related to fraud crime show that this remains a central crime phenomenon, both offline and online. In Germany, 743,472 cases were registered in 2024, which corresponds to a decline of 1.5 % compared to 2023. Nevertheless, the number of unreported cases remains high, since only about 20%of the fraud offenses are displayed, as the Federal Criminal Police Office.

Another important aspect in fraud development are international phenomena. Callcenter fraud and exploiting the Internet have increased significantly. Perpetrators often pretend to be relatives or officials to obtain money or valuables. The police react with increasing international cooperation and targeted prevention measures to sensitize endangered groups, especially seniors, and to warn against the risks.

Finally, it can be said that consumers should remain vigilant. Skeptic situations require skepticism, especially when it comes to quick money. Valuvers should never be passed on to strangers.
