Stefan Hügel remains at the head of the Thuringian State Sports Association!

Stefan Hügel remains unchallenged at the top of the Thuringian State Sports Association! The 63-year-old lawyer from Weimar was re-elected on Saturday at the 12th State Sports Day in Erfurt with an impressive 96 percent of the vote. Without any opposing candidates, he was able to further consolidate his position as president of the largest umbrella organization in the Free State, which has around 376,000 members.

Hügel, who has been steering the fortunes of the state sports association since 2018, is valued not only for his leadership, but also for promoting volunteerism in Thuringian sport. Over 60,000 committed volunteers help to strengthen the integrative power of sport and promote social cohesion in Thuringia. Andreas Schubert, sports policy spokesman for the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament, emphasized the immense importance of this commitment for the attractiveness of the federal state.

Volunteering and social cohesion

With projects such as exercise coaches for children and young people as well as appropriate pay for trainers, the state sports association is committed to a future-oriented sports policy. Schubert also called for investments in barrier-free and modern sports facilities in order to further improve the offerings. The State Sports Day in the Steigerwaldstadion was not only an election event, but also a sign of the strength and cohesion of Thuringian sport.
