Electricity consumption in Austria is increasing: New records for imports!
Österreich - Austrian end users recorded a significant increase in electricity and gas consumption in January 2025. According to krone.at an increase of 3.5 percent or 5.6 percent was registered with 6.32 TWh of electricity and 11.84 TWh gas compared to the previous year. In order to compensate for the lower electricity production from renewable energy sources, heat power plants put their production up to an impressive 20.8 percent and imported 2.7 TWh electricity, which represents a doubling compared to the previous year. At the same time, electricity exports fell by 18.8 percent.

The data also show a striking increase in cross -border electricity trade in Germany with imports of 67.0 TWh, which corresponds to an increase of 23.2 percent, while exports dropped by 10.1 percent to 35.1 TWh. In this dynamic market landscape, electricity is generated where the production costs are cheapest, which makes the European network particularly attractive. The average wholesale current price fell by 17.5 percent in 2024, which underlines the desired flexibility in the electricity market.
