New Year's Eve in danger: Over 1,000 cars could burst into flames!

Traditionally, around 1,000 cars will burst into flames on New Year's Eve in Germany, which is equivalent to the number of vehicle fires in a whole month. Insurance industry experts expect fireworks to play a crucial role in these fire incidents. The General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) estimates that up to 1,000 cars with comprehensive insurance could be set on fire by firecrackers and rockets.

Jörg Asmussen, the general manager of the GDV, recommends drivers not to park their vehicles near busy places. To minimize the risk, cars should be parked on private property or in garages. As an additional precaution, Asmussen suggests using more sheltered places, such as trees or underpasses, to provide protection from ricochet and falling shell casings.

Insurance coverage and costs

In the event of fire damage, partial comprehensive insurance usually covers the damage. In 2023, motor vehicle insurers paid around 100 million euros for around 14,200 vehicle fires, which corresponds to an average of around 7,100 euros per fire. Paint damage or vandalism caused by fireworks are also covered by comprehensive insurance, but this can potentially lead to higher insurance premiums.

Insurers' forecasts and recommendations highlight the dangers associated with the use of fireworks and urge caution to avoid personalized damage and financial losses. How in southern Thuringia reported, the number of vehicle fires could increase significantly on New Year's Eve, while also Augsburger Allgemeine confirmed that such a high risk exists due to the improper use of fireworks.
