Black celebrates his first World Cup victory in Super-G
On December 27, 2025, the Austrian skier Schwarz celebrated his first World Cup victory in Super-G. He achieved an outstanding performance in an exciting race that took place at an altitude of 2,372 meters and under dry snow conditions. However, after starting with number four, he had to wait a long time for the result. Schwarz noted that waiting for victory was more exciting than the race itself. His good choice of materials and precision when driving on snow contributed significantly to his success, reports the Kleine Zeitung.
In his career so far, Schwarz has already reached the top 10 in the Super-G three times, including an impressive second place at the World Cup final in Soldeu in March 2023. Switzerland's Marco Odermatt, a renowned rival, said he had expected a bigger deficit due to a brakeman. Odermatt also spoke about the challenging conditions, as starting number 15 was unfavorable in easy conditions, which contributed to a difficult race result.
A new race in Livigno
What is particularly noteworthy is that Livigno is featured in the Alpine calendar for the first time. Normally after Christmas the speed riders take part in the Italian Bormio race, which is traditionally held on the famous Stelvio downhill run. This year, however, the race was canceled because the Olympic skiing competition was scheduled to take place there in February. The Downhill World Championship competitions attract large numbers of spectators every year, and winter sports are an important leisure activity throughout the Alpine region.
Alpine winter sports bring numerous challenges for the athletes, and the other Austrian skiers also showed different performances in Livigno. Vincent Kriechmayr and Raphael Haaser had a disappointing premiere and were eliminated in the last race of the year. Kriechmayr admitted that he had made a lot of mistakes and his performance wasn't good enough. He would have preferred to take part in a race again straight away to prove himself.
The winter sports landscape in the Alps
The Alpine region is the heart of global alpine winter sports. Statista reports that around 16 percent of winter sports enthusiasts come from the Alps and around 40 percent of all winter sports activities take place there. With more than a third of all ski areas worldwide and almost 40 percent of all ski lifts, the Alpine region plays a central role in winter sports.
In Germany, the Allgäu is a popular destination that welcomed over four million winter sports enthusiasts last season. The German Ski Association is one of the largest sports associations in the country with over half a million members. Numerous competitions, including the Four Hills Tournament in Germany and Austria, promote interest and enthusiasm for winter sports.
Despite the challenges and the varying results, winter sports remain a passion for many athletes and fans, which will continue next year with new competitions in Wengen.
