Radeberger Brewery donates 55,000 euros for mountain rescue services in Rathen!
Rathen health resort. An incredible result: This year's fundraising campaign by the Radeberger Export Beer Brewery brought together an impressive sum of 55,000 euros for the oldest mountain rescue service in Saxony! From the beginning of May to mid-September, hikers counted their kilometers in the picturesque Elbe Sandstone Mountains - not only in Saxony, but also in the Czech region of Ústí nad Labem. 50 cents were donated for every kilometer hiked, whether hiking, climbing or cycling.
The maximum of 100,000 kilometers was reached at the beginning of September! "It's great how many people took part and managed the maximum kilometers. We don't want to be left behind and are happy to increase the donation amount with a further 5,000 euros to a total of 55,000 euros," said Hendrik Wagner, press spokesman for the Radeberger Export Beer Brewery. The money goes directly to the Association of Friends of the National Park, which passes it on to the mountain rescue service in the health resort of Rathen.
Modernization of the mountain rescue station
The mountain rescue station, built in 1912, is receiving much-needed renovations. The 55,000 euros will be used to create new sanitary rooms and convert a radio room that is no longer needed into a lounge. There will also be two separate bedrooms on the upper floor. “I am very pleased that we were able to improve the conditions for our volunteer mountain rescuers, who work tirelessly in Saxon Switzerland every Friday to Sunday evening between Easter and the end of October,” says Rita Seidel, board member of the DRK Sebnitz district association, which organizes the mountain rescue service.
The year 2023 was a record year for the mountain rescue service with over 150 operations in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. These figures show how important a well-maintained mountain rescue station is. In the last four years, the Radeberg export beer brewery has donated a total of 422,000 euros to Saxon Switzerland. “We are pleased that so many people followed our call and are pleased to support the volunteer mountain rescuers with this donation,” explains Thomas Kunack, chairman of the Association of Friends of the National Park and mayor of Bad Schandau.
