Rent in the bacon belt of Dresden: an outcry of the left!

Rent explode in the bacon belt

The rental prices in the bacon belt of Dresden rise rapidly and the left sounds alarm! The party calls for immediate measures against the unstoppable increase in costs, which not only affects the metropolis of Dresden, but also the adjacent counties. "We finally have to act!" Calls Juliane Nagel, the spokeswoman for Housing Policy of the Left in the Saxon state parliament.

Die Linke requires a doubling of the funding budget for social housing to at least 250 million euros. In recent years, rental prices in Saxony have increased dramatically. In northern Saxony, the median rental climbed by almost nine percent to 6.67 euros per square meter, while rents rose by over eight percent to 6.50 euros in the district of Leipzig. The numbers are alarming: Compared to 2020, the offer rent in northern Saxony has increased by 20.4 percent!

Social housing urgently needed

The rising rental prices are not only a problem for the big cities, but also for the surrounding regions. Nagel emphasizes that rents in relation to the often below -average income in Saxony must be viewed. Single parents, single people and pensioners who have to bear above -average housing costs in cities such as Leipzig are particularly affected. In 2022, 15 percent of tenants in Leipzig had to raise more than 40 percent of their income for rent!

The left demands from the new state government to restrict the conversion of rental into condominiums and to reduce the cutting limit for rent increases from 20 percent to 15 percent. These measures are urgently needed to protect the tenants from increasing costs. Time is urging, because the regulation for Dresden and Leipzig expires on June 30, 2025. The left is fighting for an affordable future in the housing market!
