Globus closes branches in NRW: Kaufland takes over the locations!

The family-run company Globus will close several branches in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). This decision particularly affects the locations in Wesel, Bedburg, Essen and Chemnitz. While the Globus branch in Bedburg is already closing on January 4, 2025, the location in Wesel is scheduled for January 31, 2025. A closure is planned for the other two locations in Essen and Chemnitz in mid -2025, with the exact data still standing. Kaufland will take over the locations taken over by Globus, such as Ruhr24.de

The background of these closures are due to economic difficulties. Globus, which was founded in St. Wendel in 1828 and operated over 50 locations in Germany, had taken over several branches of the insolvent chain some time ago. Despite investing of up to 20 million euros in the renovation of the locations taken over, the customer acceptance of the new sales concept could not meet expectations, which led to the current closures. The Wesel location was only renovated before the opening in spring 2023.

takeover by Kaufland

The branches that are sold are the markets in Bedburg, Chemnitz, Essen, Neubrandenburg and Wesel. In total, Globus now operates 65 branches in Germany, and the sale still has to be approved by the Federal Cartel Office. Kaufland had previously been discussed as a potential buyer. However, the new operator has guaranteed that all jobs will be preserved. According to t-online.de
