Chemnitz becomes a cultural capital: a restart against the old image!
Chemnitz aims to become a cultural capital in 2025. Under the motto "C the Unseen", the city wants to improve its image and promote cultural diversity. The 'C' stands for both the Chemnitz license plate as well as for the English word "See". The planned program includes a variety of events, including an EDVARD-MUNCH-Show, bicycle cinema, the cultural hiking trail "Purple Path" and insights into "3,000 garages".
General director Christoph Dittrich described the right -wing extremists in 2018 as a shock that affected the positive climate of the city. The program for the Capital of Culture aims to achieve more self -confidence and to activate the “quiet middle” of the population. Around 150 projects and 1,000 events with the participation of almost 900 participants are planned. But not everyone agrees with the plans: critics criticize the small part of the project and demand more political positioning against racism and xenophobia.
debate about dealing with rights
In the context of the Capital of Culture, a panel discussion was held, which was organized by the "Freie Presse". This discussion was entitled: "Chemnitz: Your rights. How does the Capital of Culture deal with disruption?". Co-managing director Stefan Schmidtke emphasized the importance of communicating with rights, which led to passionate reactions in the audience. Mayor Sven Schulze said that he would not participate in right -wing blocks against rights.
There were announcements of right -wing extremists to disturb the cultural capital year 2025, including a demonstration of the "Free Saxons" on January 18. While Schulze showed understanding that such actions had to be endured, he promised to find legal solutions. The alliance "Stand up against racism" is planning a counter -action for the same day. Anna Schramm from the Raa Sachsen association called for a clearer positioning against anti -constitutional attitudes and pointed out the fear of people about right -wing attacks.
The planned security concepts for 2025 are currently in the works, with details not yet being announced. The "C the Unseen" project is intended to help promote mutual vision, while stickers can serve as a marker for safe spaces to banish misanthropic comments.
