Neuwieder Carnival in danger: benefit events after fire!
Neuwieder Carnival in danger: benefit events after fire!
During New Year's Eve there was a devastating fire in Neuwied, which is owned by the Great Engers Carnival Society (GEK). In this incident, numerous materials, including carnival cars and carnival decorations, were completely destroyed. The clean -up work after the fire is already underway and show the extent of the destruction.
The GEK is particularly affected because all of their carnival cars, except for sooty steel frames, was lost without warning. Other clubs, such as the Citizens' and Fair Association, also stored important materials in the locomotive shed. The historic locomotive shed was not only a storage location, but also a popular party location in the region. Five firefighters suffered injuries during the extinguishing work, while the exact severity of the injuries is still unknown.
benefit events to support the affected associations
To support the affected carnival clubs, two benefit sessions are planned. The first session that takes place at the end of January is already sold out, while around a hundred tickets are still available for the second meeting in February. Both events are carried out in the Neuwied Stadthalle, which offers 480 places per event. The income from the entrance fees flow directly to the injured clubs.
The mood in the clubs fluctuates between despair and determination to maintain tradition. Ansgar Schunkert, the chairman of the GEK, expressed his grief about the loss of tradition. Maik Fischer, first chairman of the Enger Citizens' Association, is faced with uncertainties given the fire with regard to the planning of his upcoming 50th birthday.
However, the clubs show great solidarity. Other carnival clubs offered their support to borrow the required materials and decorations. Mayor Jan Uninig (CDU) met with those affected on New Year's Day to discuss the reconstruction and to give a realistic assessment that a smaller and more modern hall could be conceivable in the future. This feeling of community is considered crucial for the upcoming carnival sessions to cope with the loss.
