Austrians plan despite the crisis: summer vacation remains a must!
The Austrian's vacation planning for the summer of 2025 shows a remarkably high interest in traveling, despite the ongoing financial uncertainties. According to the survey of vienna.at, 74 percent of the population have concrete plans for a summer vacation, whereby the majority want to travel abroad. In particular, the proximity to the water attracts many travelers, although 61 percent of those surveyed are concerned about rising costs.
Already at Pentecost it plans to travel almost a quarter of the population (28 percent). The most popular destinations can be found within Austria, with Salzburg, Carinthia and Lower Austria as top destinations. City trips, hikes and wellness stays are very popular, while 63 percent of Austrians want to stay in the country at Pentecost, as the Austrian hotel association reports.

For the summer of 2025, 76 percent of Austrians are considering traveling to travel, which has been the highest value for years, according to the Europe Assistance vacation barometer. Italy takes first place with 24 percent of travelers, followed by Austria (21 percent) and Croatia (15 percent).
The vacation planning also reflects an increasing need for relaxation and new impressions, with 75 percent of the respondents specifying these motivations. There is also a growing interest in local support, since 73 percent of travelers want to support local communities at the holiday destination. Despite the positive travel intentions, a large part of the population plans to save on vacation expenses. 60 percent have to make budget cuts during the summer vacation, while 20 percent have to save a lot, as a survey of the ÖAMTC showed. The medium vacation cost budget is 1,233 euros per person, which represents an increase of 171 euros compared to the previous year, but intervened due to the inflation.
Austria is a leading holiday expenditure of 2,584 euros per budget in a European comparison, followed by the Netherlands and Germany. Over 51 percent of travelers prefer to travel by private car, which shows that many choose more flexible travel options to maximize mobility and savings.
However, the travel intentions do not remain uninfluenced of external factors. Geopolitical risks and inflation were given as reasons that negatively influence the desire to travel from 90 percent of those surveyed. Nevertheless, the high number of vacations already booked shows at the time of the survey that despite economic challenges, Austrians want to tackle the summer of 2025 full of anticipation.
