Ladybugs in the cemetery: Church brings life to grief!

In Duisburg, the innovative church mobile, affectionately known as the “Ladybird”, is causing a stir! This mobile pastoral care service brings the church directly to the people - be it at the cemetery or the weekly market. Sr. Ursula Preusser and her dedicated team are not only there for the mourners, but also offer a place for meeting and exchange. “We're just here,” explains Sr. Ursula, and that's exactly what seems to calm people down. You can enjoy a coffee without feeling pressured to register or have a conversation.

The reactions from passersby are overwhelmingly positive. Many people are surprised that church officials do not have hidden agendas. “How cool is that?” says a visitor who initially just wanted a coffee. The conversations are diverse: from grave care to memories of earlier times in the neighborhood. “It is important that someone is here and has time,” emphasizes Sr. Ursula, as she reports on touching encounters that she has had with people. A woman who shared her concerns was deeply touched by a small gesture of care.

A place of meeting

The church mobile is not only active in the cemetery, but also at events such as the Advent market or the spring market. This presence creates a connection between the church and people's everyday lives. “Sometimes you don’t need words,” reflects Sr. Ursula about the silent support she offers people. The cemetery culture in Germany, which has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage since 2020, is kept alive through such initiatives. Here we not only mourn, but also remember and commemorate - and in a very special way.
