Massive flight cancellations! Warning strike in Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf from today!
Köln/Bonn, Deutschland - Air travelers in North Rhine-Westphalia have to adjust to a chaotic travel start! At the airports Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf there will be massive flight cancellations and delays from this evening, triggered by a 24-hour warning strike. The ver.di union called up the employees of the two airports to strike to put pressure on employers during the ongoing tariff conflict. The strike begins at Cologne/Bonn Airport at 9:30 p.m. and in Düsseldorf on Monday morning at 3 a.m., such as Tagesschau
The effects are already clearly noticeable. At Cologne/Bonn Airport, which had planned a total of 168 flights for the strike period, there are 75 flights. There are also considerable restrictions in Düsseldorf. The airport operators advise the passengers to inform themselves about the current status of their flights before arriving at their airline or the tour operator. This is particularly important because Düsseldorf Airport points out that no late night check-in is offered on Sunday evening, as well as vienna.at
background of the strike
The demands of the ver.di union are clear: it requires a salary increase of eight percent, but at least 350 euros more per month and three additional days off. The background is failed collective bargaining that ended in Potsdam on Tuesday. The union speaks of an "refusal" of the employers, which the employees strike strongly at the North Rhine-Westphalian airports. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for March 14, but for travelers this initially means stress and uncertainty, while air traffic in the region is paralyzed by the strike.
