Kassel's Ludwig Emil Christmas tree is finally on Königsplatz!

The Christmas magic in Kassel has finally begun! After a bumpy start and a failed first attempt at transport, the impressive XXL Christmas tree, affectionately called “Ludwig Emil”, now stands proudly on Königsplatz. With a special permit and a night-time operation, the 16 meter high Douglas fir from Borken was successfully brought into place - three days late!

Late on Tuesday evening the time had come: the tree, which caused a stir with its 6.30 meter width, was brought to Königsplatz with a heavy transport and four accompanying vehicles. At around 1:30 a.m. he stood upright and Oliver Braun from Kassel Marketing GmbH cheered: “Everything has worked out great and we are very happy about it.” “Ludwig Emil” was originally supposed to arrive in the city center on Saturday, but its overly wide branches made transport a real challenge.

A tree with a story

The story of “Ludwig Emil” is as fascinating as his appearance. The tree, which grew in the Fabireck family's garden for over 33 years, was shortened to its maximum height of 16 meters in order to make it transportable. But the wide branches caused delays, so the tree had to remain in bark for a few more days. Named after Ludwig Emil Grimm, the lesser-known brother of the famous storyteller, the tree is traditionally given a fairytale name to suit the Kassel fairytale Christmas market.

Now that “Ludwig Emil” is finally in place, he is waiting to become the main attraction of the Christmas market from November 25th. In the coming days the tree will be festively decorated and prepared for its grand entrance. Kassel can look forward to a spectacular Christmas!
