Mulled wine prices are exploding: Where you have to pay the most in NRW!

During Advent, many people are drawn to the enchanting Christmas markets in North Rhine-Westphalia, where mulled wine is an absolute must. But in 2024, prices for the popular hot drink have skyrocketed, causing a lot of excitement. The price increase is particularly noticeable in Aachen, where the mulled wine prices are driving the madness to the extreme. While other cities such as Essen recorded an increase of over 14 percent, statistics from "weloveholidays" show that the price for a glass of mulled wine in Aachen has risen from 3 euros in 2018 to 5 euros - a shocking increase of a whopping 66.7 percent. In comparison, prices remained more stable in Dortmund, where a glass now only costs 3.50 euros.

Price increases across cities

The 2024 Christmas season not only brings festive cheer, but also rising costs. Mulled wine lovers in Düsseldorf, where 25 stands offer mulled wine, now have to pay 4.50 euros for the drink, including a deposit of 3 euros. There are price increases here too: the popular “Glühtürmchen zum Olli” now charges 50 cents more than last year. Operator Oliver Wilmering explains that the price adjustment was necessary to cover the increased purchasing costs and other expenses. The situation is similar in Duisburg, where the cups on offer rise from 3.50 to 4 euros. According to showmen, guests need to understand the rising prices, as staff costs have also skyrocketed due to new minimum wages.

Things get particularly expensive at the Christmas market around Cologne Cathedral, where organic mulled wine is sold for 5 euros - an increase of 50 cents compared to last year. The operators attribute the price increase to the increased costs for raw materials as well as personnel and energy costs. For a piece of tradition, visitors have to dig deeper into their pockets, which raises the question of how much a good mulled wine experience should really cost during this festive period. However, the rising prices at the Christmas markets make it clear that even during festive times the wallet is under increasing strain, as reporting by derwesten.de and rp-online.de has shown.
