Customs discovers fraud: Chinese bed linen labeled as a cotton!

Helmstedt, Deutschland - A huge customs in Helmstedt! Twelve tons of Chinese bed linen kept the officials of the main customs office in Braunschweig in suspense. The reason? Wrong labeling! With routine control of only two of a total of 775 boxes, it was noticed that the information on the labels did not match the actual goods. Instead of the 100 percent cotton specified, it was a bed linen made of 100 percent polyester. A clear case of misleading!

The bed linen that came to Germany via the port of Hamburg was immediately examined. The Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (Laves) was alerted and requested a rehearsal. The entire container was then unloaded and the officials set out to check every single box. Supported by 35 volunteers of the technical aid organization, the bed linen was counted, photographed and documented. The result was clear: the textile fibers confirmed the wrong labeling, and the bed linen had to be provided with new, correct labels.

a logistical effort

This incident shows how important precise information is in the trade world. The customs officials not only uncovered the incorrect goods, but also ensured that the correct information gets on the labels. A logistical effort that not only took time, but also resources. Control and umbrelling bed linen is clear proof that customs remains vigilant and protects consumers!
