Macron demands respect for Palestinians in Gaza, no real estate surgery
In the face of the wave of outrage about Donald Trump's proposal to "take over" Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron called for "respect" for the Palestinians and their Arab neighbors. He rejected the idea of the US President to carry out a large-scale expulsion of the Gazans from their homeland.
macrons clear position
"You can't say 2 million people: 'Okay, now advise? You will change'," said Macron in an exclusive interview with CNN, which was recorded on Thursday in the Élysée Palace, shortly before the upcoming AI summit this week. "The correct answer is not a real estate business, but a political approach," continued Macron.
France's support for Israel
France openly supported the right to defend himself after Hamas' massacre on October 7, 2023. Nevertheless, Macron has not hesitated to publicly criticize the Israeli policies and their procedures in the military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. France hired the arms exports to the Israeli armed forces (IDF) in October 2024 and asked other nations to follow this example.
The conflict about Gaza
"I always emphasized my dissent with Prime Minister Netanyahu," said Macron. "I don't think that such a massive operation that sometimes targets civilians is the right answer." Macron added that every "effective" answer to the reconstruction of Gaza does not mean that one could lose respect for people or countries, and emphasized the wishes of the Palestinians to remain in their homeland. He also showed that both Jordan and Egypt are not willing to accept large numbers of Gazans as refugees.
Trump's controversial suggestions
The provocative proposal from Trump provided for the Palestinians from Gaza to move to Egypt and Jordan, with the United States wanted to take over "long -term property" in the area. Trump received massive headwind for this after praising the "real estate potential" of Gazas and advocated developing the area into a "mediocre Riviera".
criticism of the international community
The international community has already made a statement from Trump's plans, similar to France. The United Nations Secretary General warned Trump of "ethnic cleansing". The Spanish Foreign Minister said on the radio that "the land of the Gazan Gaza is". In Western Europe, only the Dutch politician Geert Wilders supported this idea.
reactions from Germany and Great Britain
The German President Walter Steinmeier called the proposal "unacceptable", while Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that this would "lead to new suffering and new hatred". Some allies tried to stand on both sides to satisfy Trump and at the same time maintain decades of standards over the Palestinian rights. "Donald Trump is right in the question of Gaza," said British Foreign Minister David Lammy recently in Ukraine. "In view of the pictures of Gazaners who have been driven terribly for months, it is clear that Gaza is in ruins."
The way forward
lammy continued: "We have to make it clear that we have to see two countries and that the Palestinians can live and thrive in their home countries in Gaza." The British Prime Minister Keir Strander also made it clear that the Palestinians had to be allowed to return to their homes in Gaza.
France has decided against plans to displace the Palestinians. A government spokesman described such a step as a "destabilizing element in the Middle East".
