Kitchen fire in Bergheim: Lifesaver smoke detectors warn in time!

On the night of September 25, 2025, the fire brigade in Bergheim-Zieverich were alerted to a fire in an apartment building on Otto-Hahn-Straße. At 12:20 a.m., the fire department responded to a room fire on the fourth floor, which quickly spread to the kitchen of an apartment. Thanks to the timely warning provided by smoke detectors, the residents were able to get to safety before the fire department arrived without anyone being injured. This shows how crucial the use of smoke detectors is for safety in residential buildings.

When they arrived on site, the fire brigade recognized signs of fire in the affected area as they arrived. The extinguishing measures were immediately initiated by two teams wearing respiratory protection, while another team checked the stairwell and brought residents present outside. A rapid and effective response from the fire service ensured that the fire was quickly brought under control.

Effective measures and support

In addition to the emergency services from the Bergheim fire department, units from Thorr and Quadrath-Ichendorf as well as full-time guards and two ambulances with an emergency doctor were also on site. Fire Department Councilor Thomas Jungnatalh was in charge of operations. After the fire was extinguished and the building was ventilated and cleared, the operations ended at around 2:00 a.m.

Although there were no injuries that night, the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage caused remain unclear. However, such incidents are not atypical, as the number of fire brigade missions to fires and explosions in Germany has increased again since 2014, as current statistics show. Even though the number of fire deaths in the country has been reduced by less than half in the last 30 years, an analysis by the Federal Statistical Office shows that the risk factors in fires are still present.

These incidents highlight the need for preventative measures and safety precautions in all households. Deaths from fires and the associated dangers can be significantly reduced by using smoke detectors. In 1990, 787 people died in fires in Germany; in 2020 there were only 388. Although the number of fire deaths continues to fall, fire brigade operations have continuously increased, indicating a growing potential for danger.

The fire department and the relevant responsible authorities recommend that all residents regularly inform themselves about fire protection measures and check their smoke detectors to ensure they are working so that they are optimally prepared in the event of an emergency.
