Cologne is celebrating in the DFB Cup: 3-0 against Kiel and a spirit of optimism!
Cologne was able to celebrate the longed-for turnaround in the DFB Cup on Tuesday evening! The struggling second division team 1. FC Köln, which is still without a win in the league, overwhelmed Bundesliga promoted Holstein Kiel 3-0 and thus moved into the cup round of 16. The cheering fans in Cologne saw goals from Tim Lemperle in the 8th minute and from Luca Waldschmidt, who scored twice in the 84th and 90th + 7th minute. A real liberation for coach Gerhard Struber, whose job has been in jeopardy in the last few weeks.
Cologne shines, Kiel disappoints
The Cologne team showed a strong performance right from the start and left the unsettled performances of the past few weeks behind them. Instead, they dominated the game against a Kiel team that had not yet been able to produce any results in the first rounds of the season. Kiel, which is under pressure itself, hardly created any chances and mostly found itself in the hands of Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe, who fought his way back into the game with decisive saves.
Despite the changes in the Cologne squad and the defense, which had to switch from a four-man to a three-man chain, the team put on a cohesive and convincing performance. For Kiel, however, the fraud continued on the pitch: several changes by coach Marcel Rapp had no effect, and the desired player Jann-Fiete Arp also remained pale. The great chance for a follow-up goal with a header from Shuto Machino that hit the crossbar did not turn things around. Shortly afterwards, Waldschmidt made everything clear and let the people of Cologne cheer!
