Case trolley lick on the Brenner: Fire brigade evacuated train station because of Toluol!
At the Brenner border station, everything was still quiet this morning. At four o'clock the railway line was closed to the south, while for security reasons, only freight trains were allowed to pass north. The reason for these dramatic measures was the harmful fluid Toluol, which escaped from a freight train tank car. During routine checks, train employees discovered the leak on a tank car that was traveling from Germany to Italy. Several voluntary fire departments from the region were in action and the station area was evacuated, as Rai South Tyrol reported.
The affected firefighters worked under great pressure because Toluol is considered to be flammable and can cause serious health damage. According to Norbert Troyer, the person responsible for dangerous goods missions, large amounts of the substance emerged. The special forces were finally able to seal the leak around 6:30 a.m., which significantly improved the security situation. Nevertheless, the future of the freight car with the toluole had to be approved by a specialist before the trip could continue, as Tyrol ORF reported. Fortunately, there were no injuries and the small amount of escaping hydrochloric acid was no danger to the population.
evacuation and security of danger
The situation on the burner is extremely serious, because Toluol can cause nerve, kidney and liver damage. Contact with the vapors can lead to tiredness, drowsiness and even loss of consciousness. In addition, Toluol can pose a threat to the unborn child during pregnancy. It is all the more important that the fire brigade and the emergency services involved act quickly in the Wipptal. More than 50 men were on duty at night to free the station from the toxic substances before the regular operation could be resumed.
