Opening of the A44 section: Completion of a long-term construction site in Hesse!
An important step has been taken in northern Hesse: starting today, traffic between Waldkappel and Sontra-West will be officially facilitated by the new section of Autobahn 44. This approximately twelve kilometer long section, which is intended to create the connection between Kassel and the Thuringian border, was approved by the planning company Deges. The opening was originally supposed to have taken place in autumn 2022, but pandemic-related delivery bottlenecks and material shortages delayed the project significantly Frankfurter Rundschau reported. High-ranking representatives, including State Secretary Ines Fröhlich, are expected at the inauguration.
Costly project with far-reaching consequences
The A44 is considered one of the most expensive motorway projects in Germany with an estimated total cost of 2.72 billion euros for the entire route of around 70 kilometers. The newly opened section will also reduce the travel time for drivers by around 20 minutes, which is a particularly positive development for commuters. The final completion date for the entire highway project has not yet been set, as has the daily news noted.
Residents in the surrounding communities, such as Bischhausen and Oetmannshausen, can now breathe a sigh of relief because the new section will also reduce traffic noise and traffic congestion in residential areas that were previously heavily affected by the B7 and B27. This is a positive aspect that should improve the quality of life for citizens in the region, while the exciting future of the A44 remains in the planning stages.
