Hesse introduces resuscitation lessons: a lifeguard for everyone!
A dramatic step in education policy: Hessen introduces mandatory resuscitation lessons for 7th grade students! Cardiacs can occur at any time and anywhere, and often there is a lack of fast, life -saving measures. Prof. Dr. Thomas Voigtländer, CEO of the German Heart Foundation, warns: "Only 51 percent of the 70,000 cases of cardiac arrest outside of hospitals are intervened in good time." That has to change!
Resuscitation in the classroom
The Hessian Minister of Culture Armin Schwarz explains: "The school is the best place to initiate socially necessary changes." The aim is to enable children and adolescents to act immediately in emergencies. The lessons are intended to reduce fears and raise awareness of the importance of revival in families and friends. After a successful pilot phase with 30 schools in the school year 2023/2024, 180 other schools are now being included in the program. In the next three years, all secondary schools in Hesse should follow and thus take on a pioneering role nationwide.
A milestone in the fight against sudden cardiac death
Dr. Sonja Optendrenk, State Secretary in the Hessian Ministry of Family, Seniors, Sport, Health and Care, emphasizes: "The introduction of resuscitation lessons is an important milestone in the fight against mortality from sudden cardiac death." Teachers are trained by modules on a central learning platform in order to learn the "Check-called call pressing" method. In addition, the Björn Steiger Foundation provides resuscitation dolls and offers training courses for dealing with defibrillators. "Young people are able to reanimate adults. We have to enable them!" Emphasizes Pierre-Enric Steiger, President of the Björn Steiger Foundation.
