Bomb in Fulda: Spectacular transport before controlled explosion!
November 8th, 2024 / FULDA –A dramatic operation in Fulda! The Hessian Ordnance Disposal Service team faced a huge challenge when they discovered a 250-kilogram American bomb. The specialists from the Darmstadt regional council had to transport the dangerous ammunition with a police escort to a safe place, as it was impossible to defuse it directly at the site where it was found. A damaged igniter made the situation dangerous!
The danger was too great to defuse the bomb on site. “The site was only 70 centimeters from a residential building, and the clinic was also nearby, which was within the extended evacuation radius,” explained blasting master Alexander Majunke. The parts that triggered the ignition were so heavily stressed by the impact that there was a calculable risk. But don't panic! There was never any danger to the population.
Transporting the bomb under police protection
After careful planning, the city of Fulda found a suitable location for the controlled demolition. The bomb was transported slowly and carefully in a truck while police cordoned off all streets. Shortly after 8 p.m. the time had finally come: the bomb was rendered harmless! “A controlled demolition is always the second option after defusing, but transporting it to another location is really extraordinary,” said Majunke. The cooperation between the emergency services and the municipality was exemplary, and District President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt praised the professionalism of the team: “This operation shows how important good cooperation with the local authorities is.”
