Warning strike at Hamburg Airport: Chaos at the start of the holidays!
Hamburg, Deutschland - An unexpected warning strike has paralyzed air traffic in Hamburg and also impact on numerous airports in Germany and Austria. The large strike of the ver.di union planned for Monday started on Sunday for surprising reasons and arrived at the time of the spring holidays. All flights were missing at Hamburg Airport due to the strike, only ten of a total of over 280 planned flights were carried out, such as ZDF.de
The strikes that started at 00:00 and were supposed to continue 24 hours are part of a continuing tariff conflict. Ver.di calls for a tariff increase of eight percent, but at least 350 euros more per month, as well as higher surcharges for disadvantageous working hours. In addition, the training allowance is to be increased. These claims are rejected by the employers as unavailable. The effects are serious: around 3,400 flights are canceled in Austria, which is denied around 510,000 passengers, such as orf.at emphasized.
ver.di defends the measure
The ver.di spokesman Lars Stubbe emphasized that the warning strike was necessary to generate pressure on employers who have not yet made any useful offer. "This pressure is ultimately the goal of the warning strikes," he said. Despite the disorders for travelers, ver.di sees a purely necessary measure in these actions. A spokesman for the Hamburg airport, on the other hand, criticized the spontaneous announcement of the strike and referred to the inconvenience associated with it, which were particularly noticeable at the beginning of the holidays.
A third collective round is planned for March 14 to 16, while actions are to take place at 13 important airports in Germany. This includes, among other things, the aircraft production and the security controls, which are also likely to be affected by the strikes on Monday. Travelers in Hamburg and other affected cities are encouraged to contact the respective airlines before their flight to find out the current information about their flights.
