Used car boom in Austria: prices rise by 12%!
The demand for used cars in Austria is experiencing a boom. According to the online platform AutoScout24, there is strong interest in older models. Throughout March, used car prices remained almost stable, with an average price of 29,750 euros, a decrease of 0.92% or 277 euros compared to February, as oe24 reported.
Price development and market conditions
The general price development on the Austrian car market is moderate. In 2024, the average vehicle price fell to 26,310 euros, a decrease of 3% compared to the previous year. With these prices, Austria is in the middle of the European range. In comparison, the average price in Germany is 26,942 euros, while in France you have to pay 29,627 euros and in Luxembourg even 37,860 euros for used cars AutoScout24 shows.
In 2024, demand for used cars increased by 19%, while at the same time supply increased by 3%. Nikolaus Menches, Country Manager of AutoScout24 Austria, expects the market to stabilize in 2025. The price curve has shown a downward movement since mid-2024, which is amplified by inflation and is causing buyers to pay attention to the price-performance ratio.
Alternative drive types are trending
The popularity of vehicles with alternative drives is growing. Hybrid vehicles recorded a price increase of 2% to an average of 44,864 euros, with demand increasing by 45%. The range of these vehicles grew by 15%. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, are also enjoying growing demand, increasing by 44%. However, their average price fell by 12% to 37,863 euros.
In comparison, gasoline and diesel vehicles are more stable in price development. Petrol vehicles fell 3% to 25,777 euros, while diesel vehicles fell 5% to 24,160 euros. Despite these price drops, demand for these vehicles remains strong, so market focus is increasingly shifting to pricing ratios and the availability of alternatives, according to a report by courier is summarized.
In summary, it can be said that, despite the challenges posed by inflation and the changed market landscape, the used car market in Austria continues to show dynamic growth, which is characterized by both increasing demand and the increasing availability and popularity of alternative drive types.
