flood is not just a local phenomenon, but a global challenge. Climate change exacerbates this problem because warmer temperatures lead to higher amounts of precipitation.
climate change and flood risk
The increase in floods is also favored by human interventions in nature. In Germany, for example, 7.6 percent of all addresses are exposed to a statistical flood risk, while around 400,000 inhabitants are threatened in the coming years, especially along the Rhine and its tributaries. The destruction of natural flood areas and the sealing of soils contribute significantly to the risk of flooding.
The events in Neuberg an der Mürz illustrate the vulnerability of the infrastructure and society compared to extreme weather conditions. In view of these challenges, a consistent expansion of flood protection and the consideration of natural retention rooms is essential to minimize future damage and to ensure the safety of the residents.
