Skills boom failed? 60% work as unskilled workers in Germany!
A bang in German immigration policy! The much-discussed skilled worker immigration law is proving to be a massive failure. New figures from the newspaper “Die Welt” paint a shocking picture: 60 percent of those who come to Germany under this law do not even work in highly qualified professions.Instead of starting out as engineers or IT experts, many find themselves behind the wheel of a truck or in other low-skilled jobs.
Since the beginning of the year, around 200,000 people have flown into Germany through this immigration window, but only 40 percent of them are actually classified as “highly qualified”. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock originally set herself the goal of bringing 400,000 educated skilled workers to Germany every year - a goal that now seems unattainable. The rush is there, but not in the hoped-for qualification.
A cry for reform: challenges in focus
The law should make everything better: less bureaucracy, more trained staff at German embassies, especially in countries like India, which is a leader in visa approvals. But despite numerous visa applications, particularly from India, Turkey and the Western Balkans, the need for skilled workers remains unmet. There are shocking truths facing IT and engineering. As “Welt” reports, 20,000 visas were issued to Indian citizens alone.
However, reality trumps theory - the so-called "lane change", which gives people who entered illegally the opportunity to work and stay in Germany, looks like a paper tiger, according to "Welt". Not even the responsible ministries have statistics on how many asylum seekers really benefit from this offer. This shows that the numbers often do not keep what the headlines promise.
