Evacuation in Osnabrück: Bombs found at the main train station cause chaos!

A huge evacuation operation is imminent in Osnabrück! On Sunday, November 17th, around 14,000 people had to leave their homes while several World War II bombs were defused. The city has raised the alarm after construction workers discovered suspicious objects while working on the site of the former freight yard. The districts affected are Fledder, Schinkel and the city center, where a total of 8,650 households and around 300 commercial addresses are affected. Sirens will sound at 6:30 a.m. to warn residents and remind them to leave the area by 7 a.m.

Hospitals and traffic affected

The evacuation also has an impact on local hospitals. The Marienhospital and the Christian Children's Hospital have to be largely evacuated, although the children's hospital is only partially evacuated to ensure the safety of the patients. In addition, Osnabrück Central Station will be closed from 7 a.m. and travelers must prepare for train cancellations and delays until at least 7 p.m. The head of the public order office, Thomas Cordes, warns that residents may not be able to return to their homes until the evening.

The city has set up a hotline that affected citizens can reach on (0541) 323 44 90. This can be reached on the day of the evacuation from 6 a.m. until the end of the measure. Sunday was deliberately chosen to minimize the impact on the population and the economy, as many offices and businesses would be affected during the week. The city of Osnabrück has carried out similar evacuations in the past, but this is considered the largest in history - a veritable "container castle" is being constructed to ensure the safety of residents.
