Eckernförde.There was a disappointing picture in the town hall on Tuesday evening: only 35 visitors, mostly local politicians, found their way to the citizens' workshop on the reuse of the old school center. Despite the low response, the ideas were literally bubbling! From a cinema to daycare rooms – the suggestions were as diverse as the wishes of the citizens.

Thorsten Schulze, who led the ideas workshop together with Joachim Herrmann from the Working Group for Contemporary Building, emphasized that this evening should not be about feasibility or financing. “We want to open a colorful bouquet of what the citizens want and what is missing in Eckernförde,” he explained. And the ideas came in droves: a permanent rehearsal room for the Eckernförde marching band, social facilities such as a hospice and even a recreation center with yoga offerings were suggested.

Existing buildings offer enormous potential

The main building of the school center, which was built in 1973 based on the Kassel model, has an impressive usable area of ​​15,000 square meters! The modular design allows for rearrangements and additions, and Herrmann pointed out that even a staggered floor could be added. But before the buildings are converted, a thorough inventory and needs analysis is necessary. The facade in need of renovation and the outdated building technology cannot be ignored.

The ideas workshop will now examine the proposals for their feasibility and forward a preselection to politicians by the end of the year. “Conversions conserve resources,” said Herrmann, who cited examples such as the conversion of the Kibek carpet store in Elmshorn into apartments. Eckernförde is facing an exciting future - the citizens have spoken, now it is up to the city to make these visions a reality!
