Drama in Budapest: Austria's U18 women fail to stay in the league!
At the U18 Women's Ice Hockey World Championship Division 1a in Budapest, which took place from January 5th to 11th, the two talented East Tyroleans Siri Zimmermann from Lienz and Emma Kleinlercher from Huben represented the Austrian team. These two committed players are not only part of the Lady Hawks in Villach, but also active with the Lakers from Klagenfurt. Siri also shows her skills in the U15 of the EC IDM VSV and at UEC Lienz, which underlines her versatility.
Fight to stay in the league
In the prestigious tournament, the Austrians competed against strong opponents such as Germany, France, Italy and Norway. The team got off to a rocky start, starting with a narrow 3-4 defeat against Italy, followed by a resounding 0-7 defeat against Germany. But there were bright spots: In their game against Norway, the girls were able to take a point from a 3:4 defeat in overtime and against France they secured a thrilling 2:1 win after extra time, which brought their relegation within reach, as the Osttiroler Bote also reported.
In the decisive game against hosts Hungary, a single point would have been enough to stay in the league. Unfortunately, an unfortunate goal was scored in the exciting final phase, defeating the Austrians 0-1. This means they now have to be relegated to the B group and fight for promotion back to Division 1a next year. Despite the disappointment, Siri and Emma can be proud of their achievements and fighting spirit throughout the tournament, as [Dolomitenstadt] and the [Osttiroler Bote] noted.
