Carport fire in Reichraming: Fire department prevents disaster!

On December 22, 2025 at 10:35 p.m., the Reichraming and Losenstein fire departments in Upper Austria were alerted. The reason for this was a reported forest fire, triggered by visible firelight in a forest area. According to fireworld.at, alarm level 2 was triggered and eight other fire departments were alerted to provide support because there was an acute risk of spreading to adjacent forests and residential buildings.

During the initial investigation, the operations manager determined that it was not a forest fire, but rather a carport that was fully ablaze. A comprehensive firefighting attack was then launched from several sides. In view of the advanced nature of the fire, the use of external attacks was necessary. In order to ensure a sufficient supply of fire-fighting water, two feeder lines from the Enns over 360 meters were built.

Effective firefighting

A drone base from the Gaflenz Volunteer Fire Department was used to create a situation report and locate heat sources. Traffic on the B115 was regulated and a staging area was set up for emergency vehicles. Thanks to the rapid and coordinated action of the ten fire departments involved with around 140 emergency services, the fire was quickly brought under control and completely extinguished. Fortunately, there were no personal injuries reported.

As reported, the fire departments involved included units from Reichraming, Losenstein, Ternberg, Maria Neustift, Trattenbach, Pechgraben, Weyer, Laussa, Gaflenz and Großraming. In addition, the district fire brigade commander, the section fire brigade commander, the police and the Red Cross were also involved in the operation, with the Steyr-Land district fire brigade command in the operational management.

Firefighting and security

Firefighters' equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) play a crucial role in operations like these. According to information from dräger.com, the choice of PPE depends on the specific operating conditions. It should be easy to handle and easy to clean. When dealing with forest fires, there is special protective clothing, such as fire helmets, that are approved for forest and wildfires. Suitable safety goggles provide additional protection against flying sparks.

The challenges facing fire departments worldwide are enormous. In Germany, for example, there were around 48,100 fire departments at the end of 2022, with volunteer fire departments making up the largest share with over a million members (statista.com). These operations are often dangerous and require specialized equipment and extensive training to ensure the safety of the responders.

In summary, it can be said that the operation in Reichraming was quickly brought under control thanks to a quick response and efficient teamwork by the firefighters. It is another example of how the region's firefighters can respond to emergencies in a professional manner, which is critical not only to the safety of the public but also to the protection of property.
