Keke Topp unpacks: This is how I felt fooled by Schalke 04!
The football player Keke Topp, who moved from Schalke 04 to Werder Bremen in the summer, spoke in an interview with the Pay TV broadcaster Sky Sport about his experience during his time at Schalke. In particular, he critically commented on those responsible for the club and the circumstances that led to his change.
Topp, who played in the youth department of Werder Bremen from 2013 to 2021, returned in July after spending the past few years in Gelsenkirchen. In his new position at Bremen, he sees the opportunity to establish himself in the Bundesliga and has already had the first missions.
Criticism of Schalke 04
In the conversation, the 20-year-old explained that he originally didn't think of a change. "I didn't want to change," said Topp. However, this feeling was clouded by the Schalke leadership contract. He felt "a little fooled" because he had previously promised great future plans and hopes for his role in the storm. "I was told that I should be the new future in the storm, with me you have big plans, with me you want to make a lot of money at some point," he reported disappointed.
The situation at Schalke 04 seems to be tense. The club recently released both its trainer Karel Geraerts and sports director Marc Wilmots. Topp commented on the developments within the club and said that "there is simply a lot wrong". Signs for this have also become clear in the past few weeks, which continues to make it skeptical.
Special memories of Mike Büskens
Despite the negative experiences with Schalke, Keke Topp also has valuable memories of his time there, especially with regard to Mike Büskens, which has remained loyal to the club in various functions. A moving moment was Büskens' presence at the funeral of Topp's mother. Despite a training session, he drove three hours early in the morning to speak just briefly with a top and then drive back the long distance. "It was a special moment when my whole family is damn grateful," said Topp. This gesture has created a strong connection between the two that Topp likes to highlight. "I would go through the fire for him," he added.
In the past few weeks, Keke Topp has already played a total of 117 minutes in six Bundesliga games and hopes to continue to gain a foothold. With a mixture of memories and today's challenges, Topp remains a young player with a promising future.
