Florian Grillitsch moves to Braga: New start for the Austrian!

Florian Grillitsch, the 30-year-old midfielder, has found a new club. He is leaving TSG Hoffenheim and moving to Sporting Braga in Portugal, like Laola1 reported. The player signs a contract that binds him to the upcoming Europa League participant until 2027. Hoffenheim let Grillitsch leave for free, even though his original contract was valid until 2026.

Grillitsch came to TSG Hoffenheim from Werder Bremen on a free transfer in 2017 and played a total of 196 competitive games for the club. He scored 26 goals, with the highlight of his time being qualifying for the 2018 Champions League. Last season, Grillitsch spent time on loan at Real Valladolid, a stint that did not bring the desired result as the Spanish team was relegated from LaLiga.

Advice from Ralf Rangnick

His move to Braga was influenced, among other things, by discussions with Austria's national coach Ralf Rangnick. Rangnick recommended that Grillitsch change clubs in order to get regular playing time. This is particularly important in view of the upcoming 2026 World Cup, in which Grillitsch would like to take part. The coach continued to nominate Grillitsch for the national team despite a difficult phase last season.

Under coach Christian Ilzer, who retired the player from the team in November, Grillitsch no longer had any prospects at Hoffenheim. Ilzer's assessment was that Grillitsch was not compatible with the team's style of play. This meant that it was time for the player to take a new path.

The future in Braga

In Sporting Braga, Grillitsch faces competition, particularly from Rodrigo Zalazar and Gabriel Moscardo. The club has made a solid start to the season with seven points from three games and is hoping to make the Europa League group stage a positive one.

Although there was also interest from another Bundesliga club and a Spanish club - both without European Cup participation - Grillitsch decided to move to Portugal. This move could be a crucial factor for the midfielder to cement his place in the national team and thereby support his own ambitions for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
