Cyber attack on Bremen authorities: 2,000 spam emails within minutes!

In Bremen, the Senate experienced a massive spam mail attack this day, which targeted several departments and the police. As the Borkener Zeitung reported, the health, social and construction resort was attacked via an interactive contact form on its website. Within a very short time, over 2,000 emails arrived in the mailboxes, which led to an overload of the systems. In order to avoid further damage, the contact forms were immediately deactivated.

The Federal Criminal Police Office already warned of the increasing cyber attacks on authorities in the past, whereby the attacks of so-called botnets, i.e. network of infected computers, have a central role. A spokesman for the Senate said that the online attacks were targeted to overwhelm the administrative infrastructure, which could potentially lead to massive functional disorders. The current incident raises questions about the security situation of the Bremen authorities, the exact consequences of which are currently still unclear, as is also Buten and inland reported. The BKA boss Holger Münch emphasized the increasing threat from cyber crime and the potential economic and social damage that can bring about such attacks.
