An emotionally charged evening took place in a small but impressive setting in the Gothic House. Dirk Tessarek, the author of the captivating book “Resistance in the Provinces”, took his listeners straight into the turbulent times of the GDR. Its protagonist “Michael”, a fictional character, represents the experiences of young people who not only lived in the shadow of a dictatorship, but actively rebelled against the GDR regime. Tessarek, who interweaves his own life story with that of Michael, vividly describes the fears and longings of youth in Brandenburg an der Havel.
With masterfully portrayed memoirs, Tessarek illuminates the draconian conditions under which he and his friends lived, including the failed attempt to escape via the West German embassy in the Czech Republic, which landed him in prison. Readers get an up-close look at the creation of a self-help group, supported by a courageous pastor, and the challenges the group had to overcome as a result of sophisticated surveillance by state security.
A call for resistance
In his book, Tessarek appeals to the forgotten heroes of the province who did not remain silent despite the regime's oppression. The reading became a special meeting for old friends and classmates, with Tessarek himself giving an outlook on his further artistic ambitions in Brandenburg. Accompanied musically by the talented Marie Thielemann, who brought the songs from the time to life, the evening was a moving reminder of a painful but also inspiring era.
The author is already working on his next book - one about the persecution of Jews during the Third Reich and the dark machinations of the state security after the construction of the Wall. This gripping story will revisit the legacy of the past and shine a new light on the memories of a dark time, with a particular focus on the fate of a West German journalist. A call to remember and reflect on the courageous people who fought against injustice!
