Fairy tale competition in Brandenburg: Looking for creative minds!

In Brandenburg an der Havel, the 21st "Undine" competition for new fairy tales was launched. The organizers are the city of Brandenburg an der Havel and the Fouqué library. This competition is reminiscent of the important writer Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, who was born in the city in 1777 and is known primarily by his fairy tale "Undine", which was published in 1811. Fouqué's work served as a template for other fairy tales, such as "The Little Mermaid" and shows the deep connection of the city to fairy tale literature.

annually take part in the competition that is aimed at children, adolescents and young adults aged 7 to 25. The submissions for the fairy tales must be submitted by February 12, 2025, the birthday of Fouqués. The fairy tales may include a maximum of four handwritten A4 pages or 8,000 computer signs.

The award event will take place on March 23, 2025 in the Brandenburg Theater. In four age groups-7-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-16 years and 17-25 years-four main and ten special prizes are expected to be awarded, each endowed with 150 euros. The main prize consists of an Undine statuette made by the artist Jan Beumelburg.

After completing the literary competition, the opportunity to implement the winning fairy tales in terms of image. Submissions can be handed over in the Fouqué library in printed or handwritten form by February 12, 2025. Submissions are also possible by email to the addresses cornelia.stabrodt@stadt-brandenburg.de and thomas.messerschmidt@stadt-brandenburg.de. Works of art of the previous year will be exhibited in the cultural pavilion until February 4, 2025.

The Undine competition also includes a competition for illustrators, which is part of the overall competition and takes place from 1st January to June 15, 2025. Participants can freely choose style, form and technology in the image artistic competition and also submit their works up to four once. A deadline for the illustrations applies on May 16, 2025, and the award for the illustrators takes place on June 15, 2025.

All contributions must be provided with information on the name, first name, age, address, telephone number and, if necessary, to school. With the participation, the participants transfer the exploitation rights to the organizer. The juries of the competition consist of a maximum of six independent members who are guided by renowned artists. The names and work of the award winners are published after completion of the competitions.
