Brandenburg's health revolution: digital future for patients!

The 2nd Digital Health Summit in Brandenburg an der Havel has impressively showed how great the potential of digital transformation in German healthcare is. Over 100 scientists and doctors from various German university clinics were present and developed a comprehensive 10-point plan. This plan should serve to optimize patient care through innovative technologies. Prof. Hendrik Borgmann emphasizes that, according to a McKinsey study, up to 42 billion euros could be saved annually, which could then be used more effectively in the interests of the patient:

During the summit, which took place on Thursday and Friday of the last week of August, the topics of artificial intelligence, telemedicine, augmented/virtual/mixed reality and health apps were discussed in detail. Under the patronage of Brandenburg's Minister of Health Ursula Nonnemacher, the experts presented their visions on digital health. The importance of AI-supported systems that already process large amounts of data and thus enable diagnoses faster.

pioneering role in Brandenburg

Minister Nonnemacher speaks of the fact that Brandenburg acts as a pioneer in digitization and that this progress could also be useful for other federal states. A future-oriented example could be the planned center for artificial-intelligence-based medicine in Brandenburg, a concept that is modeled on the California model.

The summit was made by Prof. Hendrik Borgmann, Clinic Director of Urology at the University Hospital Brandenburg (UKB), and his colleague Dr. Julian Struck. The latter emphasized the importance of digitization in order to be able to counter the challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers and the demographic change in the healthcare sector. The experts present analyzed the existing specialist literature and developed the 10-point plan in consensus, which makes specific demands on politics.

content of the 10-point plan

The comprehensive 10-point plan requires:

  1. establishment of clear responsibilities: The responsibility for diagnoses and therapies must always be with the treating doctors, even if AI-supported systems are used.
  2. Promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation: Digital solutions should be developed in close cooperation between different departments, including medical specialists and patient representatives.
  3. Expansion of educational and further education programs: The acceptance of digital health solutions depends heavily on the comprehensive training of medical staff.
  4. Financing and remuneration of digital health solutions: These systems must be proven to be financed and billed in the health system.
  5. Integration of health apps: These should not only be used for treatment, but also for prevention and health promotion.
  6. Funding programs to support digital health solutions: Clear programs are necessary that promote clinical studies and developments.
  7. Application of telemedical concepts: In view of the possible deficiency, modern telemedical approaches are necessary.
  8. Coping with legal and structural challenges: The legal framework must be improved for AI applications in medicine.
  9. creation of structural requirements: essential framework conditions must be created to enable clinical use of AI.
  10. Future potential of AI systems in therapy optimization: AI could generate personalized therapies that significantly improve treatment results.
  11. The unity among the researchers is great: digital change is not only important, but inevitable for the future of medicine in Germany. Future developments and challenges should also remain unnoticed to realize the vision of digitized health care.
