Wustermark warns of traffic chaos: Commuter rush threatens from 2025!

Wustermark. The Berlin-Hamburg railway line will be closed for months from August 2025, and that will have dramatic consequences for commuters in Havelland! The municipality of Wustermark is sounding the alarm and is demanding urgent support from the federal and state governments in order to deal with the impending overload of the train stations. Concern about the rush of commuters is growing because trains will no longer run in many surrounding towns such as Paulinenaue and Nauen.

In order to meet the rush of commuters, Mayor Holger Schreiber (independent) is planning to build a new, 150 meter long road on newly acquired municipal land. This road is intended to serve as a bus turning loop and replace the previously far too small solution. But the problem? Wustermark does not have the necessary 850,000 euros for this project and has been waiting for months for a declaration of cost assumption from the federal or state governments. “We are facing winter and our backs are almost against the wall,” warns Schreiber.

Commuter rush with up to 20 buses per hour

The situation will worsen dramatically: instead of five to seven buses per hour, up to 20 buses are expected during the closure! This affects an estimated 20,000 commuters in Havelland. “There will be total traffic chaos,” said Schreiber. The municipality has already presented plans to adapt the transport infrastructure in a timely manner, but the conversion will not be possible without financial support.

Citizens' anger could quickly reflect on the community if the necessary measures are not implemented in a timely manner. “If this is not implemented on August 1st next year, the anger of the citizens will hit the community,” fears Schreiber. He receives support from the left-wing Bundestag member Christian Görke, who is calling on Deutsche Bahn to act quickly and ensure that the necessary costs for the infrastructure are covered. The Wustermarker train station is becoming a hotspot for rail replacement services – time is of the essence!
