Vienna gets a new bike path: safe and directly into the countryside!
On June 19, 2025, a new, 250 meter long direct connection cycle path between Mariahilfer Straße and Stollgasse was officially opened in Vienna. This implements a long -standing demand for the bicycle lobby, which has campaigned for a safe and practical cycling infrastructure. The new two -way bike route on the new building belt was realized after the renovation of the Sophienspital, where a trail was previously closed. Colorful concrete control walls now ensure a secure separation of the bike path from motorized traffic.
Before implementing the new cycle path, cyclists had to cross the belt twice beforehand and pass a lot of traffic lights. This redesign of the external lane into a safe, permanent two-direction cycle path improves the situation considerably and promotes the use of bicycles in the city. The use of concrete control walls after the construction site gives the bike path additional protection and security.
Focus on security in Bergheim
Similar to Vienna, the city of Bergheim has developed plans for a new city cycle path. This should create a connection from the sports facilities in Zieverich via Thorr to the city center. The decision for this project was recently made by the climate, environment and mobility committee. A route is planned that leads over Albrecht-Dürer-Allee, Zeiss-Straße and Klosterstrasse.
A remarkable aspect of this project is that cyclists in this area have priority to drivers and are allowed to drive side by side. In addition, the top speed for vehicles is limited to 30 km/h. In order to ensure the required width for the bike path, 12 parking spaces must be removed on Zeiss-Straße. The police have not expressed any objections to the establishment of these bicycle roads, and the project is based on a proposal from the Bergheim local group of the ADFC, which underlines the relevance of the local bicycle infrastructure.
Cycling monitoring in Berlin
In order to analyze long -term developments in cycling, manual traffic counts have been carried out at selected locations in Berlin since 1983. From 2012, automatic counting points were added, and in 2022 19 locations were already in operation. These counting points are crucial to grasp fluctuations in cycling, for example by weather -related influences.
Permanent counting points allow a detailed analysis of seasonal, weekly and seasonal changes in cycling. Regular test counts and monthly data reviews ensure the quality of the data guided. This data is usually evaluated in the spring and published in an annual report, with the cycling figures subjected to a strict quality check to ensure the reliability of the results. Raw data is available in annual files and contained tested and properly marked information that is of great importance for the transport analysis.
The developments in Vienna, Bergheim and Berlin illustrate the growing effort for an improved bicycle infrastructure, which increases the safety of cyclists and contributes to the promotion of environmentally friendly locomotion.
