Crystal clear crisis: water pipes burst in Schierensee and Berlin!

An incident occurred in the community of Schierensee on Christmas Eve that significantly affected the water supply and traffic situation. How kn-online.de reported that several water pipes burst in different parts of the community. However, water supplies were quickly restored, although major concerns remain due to flooding in the streets.

To ensure the safety of residents, parts of the streets were closed. Mayor Manfred Kaiser described the incidents as a “bad surprise”. In detail, the affected areas were between the former “Linde” restaurant and the dairy as well as between Schulstrasse and “Linde”. After the pipe burst, “crater-like” holes appeared in the streets, which led to a new regulation of garbage collection. Residents were personally informed of the situation and signs and beacons were installed to cordon them off. Drivers often ignore the barriers and are only allowed to use the closed roads “at their own risk”. The pipes, which are over 40 years old, are scheduled to be renovated on January 13, depending on weather conditions.

Pipe burst in Berlin affects hundreds of thousands

berliner-kurier.de platzte ein 100 Jahre altes Wasserrohr in der Seestraße im Stadtteil Wedding. In der Folge waren Hunderttausende Haushalte für ein bis zwei Stunden ohne Trinkwasser.

The pipe burst happened around 8 p.m. and water supply returned to normal by midnight. At the break point, the line was closed using valves. The outflowing water created a small lake, which led to the Seestrasse being closed. The four-lane Seestrasse in the direction of Müllerstrasse is now passable again, but the direction of Plötzensee/city motorway remains closed. This situation also interrupted a tram line, which further increased traffic congestion. A troubleshooting team was on site within a few minutes and the population was informed via warning apps.

The broken pipe dates from 1928 and is made of gray cast iron, a material no longer used today. On average, around 500 pipe bursts occur every year in Berlin's water and wastewater network, which covers around 19,000 kilometers. On average, the age of the water pipes is just over 57 years, and around 100 million euros are invested in modernizing the network every year.
