Coalition in the crisis: Finance Minister Lindner has to go!

A storm cloud has brewed over the traffic light coalition: The Supreme Court has made a pioneering judgment that could have massive consequences for rental prices in Germany. In hundreds of thousands of rental contracts, illegal index clause is contained, which often allowed landlords to adapt rental prices to inflation or construction costs. According to the krone this could lead to repayments of 15 to 20 billion euros - a blow for many tenants whose contracts could now potentially represent a zero -sum game.

political earthquake in the coalition

The downside of these legal earthquakes are the political turbulence in Berlin. Chancellor Olaf Scholz officially announced the dismissal of finance minister Christian Lindner after the tensions between the coalition partners had become unbearable. Scholz expressed that Lindner had blocked important laws too often through party -tactical behavior. A few hours later, the FDP announced that all four liberal ministers will lay down their offices and thus fall the traffic light coalition into its most severe crisis, like the DW Reported.

These political arguments are not new, but were fired between the parties by unconstitutional budget practices and publicly staged disputes. A judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court in November 2023 shall stagger the government's budgeting and endangered the coalition's financial situation. Teachers, citizens and companies are now keeping their breath away - the spirits that Scholz and Lindner have conjured up could now overthrow the entire government.
