Hessen, Deutschland - The Ministry of Agriculture in Hesse took immediate measures in response to a possible outbreak of the mouth and claw disease (MKS). These include the use of additional PCR tests and Elisa tests for the determination of infection and antibody notices in dead animals. Pet owners are called up to exercise increased vigilance and take suitable organic safety measures. In the event of symptoms of a disease, they should inform their care veterinarian immediately.
The particularly endangered animals include cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, lamas, alpacas and buffalo, as well as zoo and wild animals. The mouth and claw disease is considered highly infectious and is one of the most serious animal disease worldwide. In the event of an outbreak, all animals of the affected company must be killed. Due to a recently outbreak in Brandenburg, Germany has lost its recognition as "free of mouth and claw disease without vaccination". Traders must also expect export restrictions for animal products from Hesse to third countries.
The symptoms of the MKS include fever, apathy, vesicles on skin and mucous membranes, increased salivation, unsettling and lameness. There are no specific treatment options for this animal disease. The latest MKS outbreak in Germany has been the first in more than 35 years and was found near Berlin. However, such outbreaks can be observed regularly in many countries in Africa, Asia, South America, Turkey and the Middle East.
