November 9, 1989 remains an unforgettable day in Berlin's history - the fall of the Wall! This year the city is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a spectacular program that will make Berliners' hearts beat faster. At the weekend, the former stretch of the Wall is transformed into a lively celebration with exhibitions, readings and a unique karaoke atmosphere!

The celebrations begin on Saturday along the four-kilometer route that stretches from the Reichstag to Axel-Springer-Straße. The streets will be closed to car traffic to ensure visitors have an undisturbed experience. On this route, guests can expect impressive demo signs from the past as well as 5,000 newly designed posters with the motto “Uphold freedom!” present creative messages about democracy and freedom. Senator for Culture Joe Chialo emphasizes the importance of preserving these values ​​at a time when populism and social division are increasing.

Music and hands-on activities

The “Festival of Freedom” on Saturday evening promises to be an unforgettable experience! Over 700 musicians from Berlin and all over the world will play rock classics at the same time in five different locations. Spectators are invited to open their hearts and sing along - screens along the route show the song lyrics, in the style of a karaoke evening. Organizer Moritz van Dülmen expects up to 100,000 people to gather to celebrate together and form the “longest rock band ever”!

The festivities will be broadcast live by rbb television. Viewers can look forward to legendary songs like “S.O.S.” by Silly, “Heroes” by David Bowie and “Freiheit” by Marius Müller-Westernhagen. The crowning conclusion is a spectacular fireworks display. The celebrations will continue on Sunday, including on the Campus for Democracy in the former Stasi headquarters, where there will be numerous events. Every visitor will receive a free anniversary book honoring the peaceful revolution, and on Sunday evening the Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot will provide the final musical highlight!
