Jocher disappointed: anger and frustration after the Super G debacle in Val Gardena!
In an exciting Super-G in Val Gardena, the Italian skier Mattia Casse was able to win with just one hundredth of a second ahead of the American Jared Goldberg. Casse set up the best time of 1: 28.23 minutes in the soft snow and proved that he mastered the demanding route under changing lighting conditions and high speeds. "The slope is good, not quite as hard," Casse noticed after his triumph.
Not all athletes were able to call up their services. The Schongauer Simon Jocher, who went into the race with high expectations, failed early after a serious driving error. The 28-year-old started promising and was initially well in the race, but had to give up after 25 seconds, which visibly frustrated him. "I'm absolutely angry with myself," he said, while ARD expert Felix Neureuther praised his efforts and found that a top result would have been possible on this day.
debut and surprises
A ray of hope for German skiing was 22-year-old Luis Vogt, who took 16th place with a strong performance and thus collected points. World Cup debutant Maximilian Schwarz lined up between the stronger drivers and landed in 56th place, even after he could not be disturbed by an unorthodox leap. Jocher and Schwarz continue to offer hope to the German Ski team, even if the past few years have not been able to see any locals on the podium in Val Gardena, since Josef Ferstl 2017.
The competition was also overshadowed by a fall of the Austrian Daniel Danklmeier, which resulted in an interruption of the race. Nevertheless, the fascination of the Super-G remains in Val Gardena, where the notorious camel humps will be bypassed extensively, but the challenges of the route may not be underestimated.
