Snow chaos before Christmas: danger of slippery conditions and white wonders in Bavaria!

On December 27, 2024, a striking weather situation will appear in Bavaria, which will primarily affect the upcoming Christmas holidays. The forecasts speak of a significant change in the weather, which points to a possible white Christmas.

As the tz.de reported that temperatures in Munich rose to up to two degrees Celsius on December 24th. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official slippery warning for Munich and neighboring Bavarian districts, urging drivers to take particular caution. Forecasts indicate light snowfall in the afternoon and evening, accompanied by temperatures between 0 and -1 degrees Celsius.

In a first update on the same day, no significant snowfall was recorded overnight, meaning that streets and meadows remained mostly snow-free. Still, light snowfall was expected in the morning while temperatures rose to 1 degree Celsius. The weather situation could lead to further rainfall and a cooling to 0 degrees Celsius after sunset.

Snowfall in Bavaria

The DWD already provided a positive outlook for the weather around Christmas on December 23rd when it reported good forecasts for a white Christmas in Bavaria. The cold, damp sea air is expected to lead to significant snowfall in the Alps. By Tuesday evening, between 10 and 20 cm of fresh snow was forecast in the Alps, and even up to 30 cm at higher altitudes. At the same time, the DWD warned of slippery conditions and frost, especially above 400 meters altitude.

From a further analysis on muenchen.t-online.de was published, it appears that the weather conditions in Bavaria will be influenced again by a cold front from the north on Friday, which could lead to the onset of winter. A blanket of snow of up to 10 cm is expected over large parts of Bavaria, including Munich, on Christmas Eve. Up to 40 cm of snow could even fall in the Black Forest.

A snow cover of between 2 and 5 cm is forecast for Munich, while up to 40 cm of snow may occur in the mountainous regions. However, meteorologists warn that the snow cover could melt rapidly due to a "subtropical air mass", leading to a thaw and rising temperatures in the following days.
